ASHLEA PENFOLD

From Morocco with The Lane to Bora Bora with Billabong, makeup artist Ashlea Penfold’s attention to detail and passion for her craft has seen her work on many incredible projects.

Clients include Spell and Gypsy Collective, Vogue Brides, Rhythm, Grace Loves Lace, Cotton On, Arnhem and Samantha Wills - though she is perhaps most recognisable for her signature golden glowing skin.

Whether you've got a special event coming up, you're planning a weekend away or you just want that golden glow to get you through the week, who better to talk us through skin prep and getting that glow than the incredible Ash Penfold.

Ash has worked with our founder Elle Ferguson on many campaigns, including the amazing Billabong x Elle Ferguson collab, so we asked Ash for her top tips and industry secrets for achieving that dreamy dewy skin at home, and also found out what products she can’t live without.

As a makeup artist and hair stylist based in Australia, a golden glow is pretty common as a go-to look. How do we prep our skin?

I love prepping the skin head to toe the night before. I will use a body scrub in the shower that doesn’t have an oil base (otherwise my fake tan won’t adhere properly). Then I will apply 2 coats of my Elle Effect and leave on for 2 hours. Then a super light shower and moisturise using my fave Brazilian Bum Bum Cream.

On the odd occasion I need a model to be more tanned on a shoot, I will give her 2 quick coats of Elle Effect, do her hair and makeup then give her a quick rinse and moisturise. It’s been a lifesaver on shoots.

What highlighter shades work best with what skin tones?

I usually find people who wear gold jewellery look great in a gold highlight and those who wear silver suit a more cool-toned highlight. I personally love to use more of a champagne tone to give a more understated glow.

Where do we apply highlighter?

I love a glow and making the skin look lit from within rather than highlighted. So I love to prep the face by using a glowy base like the Dior Universal or Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter. Once I have applied foundation, I will then hit the high points of the face using Chantecaille Radiance Gel Bronzer which is just so luminous and radiant on the skin.

What was the last campaign you shot?

Pennyland With Libby Willis and Cristina Mantas on the Gold Coast.

Where in the world is next for you?

Next up, I’m off to New Zealand for a very exciting campaign.

What's the craziest thing you've ever done on a shoot?

Shot in the Sahara Desert in the middle of a sand storm.

What's your all time fave glam look?

My favourite would have to be a beautiful skin look, white beautiful brows glossy skin and freckles.
